Little Farmer's Cay Yacht Charter: Authentic Island Life in the Exumas
Little Farmer's Cay is a charter location in The Exumas, a yacht charter area in Bahamas.
Little Farmer's Cay Charter Guide
Tucked between Great Guana Cay and the more remote southern Exumas, Little Farmer's Cay is a tiny inhabited island that offers yacht charter guests an authentic glimpse of traditional Bahamian life. At only around 68 acres, the cay feels intimate and welcoming, with a small local community surrounded by extraordinarily clear turquoise water, sandbanks, reefs, and quiet beaches.
Unlike the private resort islands farther north, Little Farmer's Cay revolves around its community and longstanding relationship with the sea. Guests can step ashore for Bahamian food, meet local residents, visit small shops, walk across the island, swim with sea turtles, or simply enjoy the relaxed atmosphere around the harbour and yacht club.
Its position also makes it a natural stop on a longer Exumas itinerary. The cay lies roughly nine miles south of Black Point and 15 miles from Staniel Cay, with easy onward cruising toward Cave Cay, Musha Cay, Rudder Cut Cay, and eventually Great Exuma.
Little Farmer's Cay Navigation
Navigation around Little Farmer's Cay requires particular attention to shallow sandbanks, narrow channels, tidal currents, and Farmer's Cay Cut, which connects the Exuma Bank with the deeper waters of Exuma Sound. Approaching from the north involves following the western shore of Great Guana Cay before entering a clearly defined channel bordered by extensive shallows.
Farmer's Cay Cut itself is short and relatively deep, but strong tidal currents can develop, particularly when an ebb tide meets easterly wind and creates steep chop. Captains will normally plan transit around suitable tidal conditions and use current charts, visual navigation, and local knowledge when entering from either the Bank or Sound side.
Little Farmer's Cay Anchorage
One of the most comfortable anchoring areas lies on the western side of Little Farmer's Cay, where yachts can find sandy bottom, good holding, and approximately 5.5 feet or more of water depending on tide and position. This area is particularly well protected from the prevailing easterly winds, although shallows extend outward from several points near the airstrip.
Additional anchoring opportunities exist near Farmer's Cay Yacht Club, Big Harbour, and off Ty's Sunset Bar & Grill. The Ty's anchorage carries roughly 7 to 9 feet of water with good sand holding, but it is exposed to most directions except east and can become choppy as afternoon breezes build. Stronger tidal currents affect some of the eastern and harbour anchorages, making careful yacht placement important.
Little Farmer's Cay General Information
Little Farmer's Cay is home to a small permanent community and remains one of the more personal stops along the Exuma chain. Farmer's Cay Yacht Club & Marina, established in 1989, provides dockage, shore power, water, a restaurant and bar, Wi-Fi, laundry, ice, accommodations, and other services for visiting yachts.
The island is also famous for the Farmer's Cay Festival and Regatta, traditionally held around the first Friday in February, when Bahamian sailing sloops and visiting boats gather around the cay. Outside festival week, the pace returns to normal, with swimming, turtle encounters, snorkeling, fishing, and relaxed meals ashore defining the experience.
