Warderick Wells Yacht Charter: The Heart of the Exuma Cays Land & Sea Park

At the heart of the Exuma Cays Land & Sea Park, Warderick Wells is one of the most spectacular and environmentally significant stops on an Exumas yacht charter. Brilliant sandbanks curve around impossibly clear channels, while coral reefs, secluded beaches, hiking trails, and protected wildlife surround an island almost entirely dedicated to conservation.

Warderick Wells also serves as the headquarters of the Exuma Cays Land & Sea Park, with Bahamas National Trust wardens based on the island. From the yacht, guests can tender ashore to the visitor center, hike to panoramic viewpoints, snorkel protected reefs, explore beaches, and learn more about the ecosystems that make this part of the Bahamas so extraordinary.

For many charter guests, however, the unforgettable feature is simply the landscape. The famous northern mooring field follows a narrow, deep-blue channel bordered by luminous white sandbanks, creating one of the most recognizable anchorages anywhere in the Exumas.

Approaching Warderick Wells requires careful navigation through the shallow banks and channels characteristic of the central Exumas. The North Mooring Field follows a narrow natural channel surrounded by extensive sandbanks, making accurate charts, visual navigation, tide awareness, and local knowledge essential. The mooring area itself generally carries around 8 to 12 feet of water.

Additional access is available around Emerald Rock and Hog Cay. Hog Cay's approach around London Gin Rock is more intricate, while entry from the Exuma Sound side can be considerably more straightforward. Captains should coordinate with the Exuma Park office on VHF Channel 9 for current mooring arrangements and local guidance before entering.

Warderick Wells has three principal Bahamas National Trust mooring areas: the North Mooring Field, Emerald Rock, and Hog Cay. The North field is the most iconic and generally the best protected, with boats secured along the narrow turquoise channel close to the park headquarters. It is highly sought after and can fill quickly when poor weather is forecast.

Emerald Rock provides a larger alternative on the western side of Warderick Wells, with approximately 7 to 9 feet of water and good protection from northerly through southeasterly conditions. Hog Cay offers a much smaller mooring field on the eastern side, with only limited capacity. Mooring or anchoring fees apply within the park, and captains should confirm current regulations and availability with the park office.

Warderick Wells is protected within the 112,640-acre Exuma Cays Land & Sea Park, established in 1958 as the first marine reserve in the Bahamas and wider Caribbean. The park operates as a no-take reserve, meaning fishing and removal of marine life are prohibited. Coral reefs, mangroves, seagrass beds, birds, turtles, iguanas, and the endangered Bahamian hutia all benefit from this protection.

One of the island's best-known excursions is the hike to Boo Boo Hill, which provides panoramic views across Warderick Wells, the mooring fields, and Exuma Sound. Visitors can also explore numerous nature trails, beaches, blow holes, and the remains of a historic Loyalist plantation on the southeastern side of the cay.
