Norman's Cay Yacht Charter: History, Beaches & the Northern Exumas

Located in the northern Exumas between Highbourne Cay and the Exuma Cays Land & Sea Park, Norman's Cay combines beautiful anchorages, pristine beaches, fascinating history, and one of the Bahamas' most recognizable snorkeling sites. Its sheltered lagoon and surrounding turquoise shallows make it a natural stop for yachts cruising south from Nassau through the Exuma chain.

The island has evolved considerably in recent years. Alongside its undeveloped coastline and quiet beaches, Norman's Cay now offers a modern marina, private accommodations, a Yacht Club, Beach Club, dining, and watersports facilities. The marina can accommodate large yachts, while the surrounding waters remain the real attraction for guests arriving by sea.

Norman's Cay is perhaps best known among charter guests for the submerged aircraft wreck lying in shallow water near the southern end of the island. Now surrounded by schools of tropical fish, it has become an unusual snorkeling site and a reminder of the cay's notorious smuggling-era history.

Norman's Cay surrounds a shallow interior lagoon, with extensive banks, sandbars, and tidal channels requiring careful navigation. Yachts approaching through the northern Exumas should rely on current charts, local knowledge, and visual navigation, particularly when entering shallower areas around the southern end of the cay. Strong tidal currents can occur around the lagoon entrances and channels.

The island now also provides a substantial marina for yachts that prefer alongside facilities rather than anchoring. Norman's Cay states that its marina can accommodate vessels up to approximately 190 feet, while the cay's private runway provides another convenient arrival option for charter guests joining a yacht directly in the Exumas.

The principal yacht anchorage lies off the western side of Norman's Cay, where depths are generally around 8 to 12 feet over sand. Holding is typically good once clear of grassy patches, and the anchorage provides plenty of room in settled easterly conditions. It is more exposed to winds and swell from the west, so weather remains an important factor when selecting an overnight position.

Another anchoring option lies around the southern entrance to the interior lagoon, where sandy holding can be good but tidal currents are considerably stronger. Older cruising guidance reports approximately 10 to 14 feet near the edges of the channel and warns vessels to remain clear of active approach routes used by larger service vessels. The yacht's captain will choose the safest location according to draft, tide, wind, and current conditions.

Norman's Cay is a small island of several hundred acres with an unusually colorful past. During the late 1970s and early 1980s, parts of the island became associated with a major drug-smuggling operation, and the submerged aircraft wreck remains the most visible relic of that period. Today, the cay has been redeveloped around luxury hospitality while retaining large areas of natural coastline and remarkably clear surrounding waters.

Modern facilities include Norman's Cay Marina, Norman's Cay Yacht Club, a Beach Club, MacDuff's, accommodations, and watersports, making the island considerably more developed than many neighboring northern Exuma cayes. Snorkeling, diving, paddleboarding, kayaking, fishing, and exploring the aircraft wreck are among the principal activities for yacht guests.
